As Ordens Religiosas na Diocese de Évora 1165 - 1540

Abstract

This article introduces an analysis of the regular clergy settlement in the diocese of Évora between 1165 – year of the re-establishment of the diocese – and 1540, when it was decreed as metropolis.
It presents a study of the settlement of religious orders in the diocese of Évora during this period, in order to understand how that process was related both to the political history of the region and to the strategies of the ecclesiastical organisation of the territory, mentioning as well the aims of each order.
